Description
What is scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, places tiny pigment deposits into the scalp to reduce the contrast between hair and bare skin. It does not regrow hair and it is not a medical treatment — it changes what the eye sees. A parting that showed through, a thinning crown or a receding hairline reads as noticeably denser.
We are deliberately clear about this at consultation. SMP is a cosmetic solution with excellent results in the right cases and no result at all in the wrong ones, and we would rather tell you that before you book than after.
Two approaches
- Density shading — for thinning hair that is still present. Pigment darkens the visible scalp between the hairs, so light no longer bounces off bare skin.
- Hairline and stubble effect — individual dots replicating the look of closely shaved hair, for a receding hairline or a shaved head.
Who it is for
- A widening parting or a thinning crown
- Diffuse thinning after illness, stress, pregnancy or hormonal change
- A receding hairline
- Camouflaging scars from hair transplant surgery
Before your appointment
- Wash your hair the morning of the treatment
- Do not shave the area unless we have agreed on the stubble effect
- No alcohol or energy drinks for 24 hours
- Avoid sunburn on the scalp in the two weeks beforehand
How the treatment works
SMP is built over two to three sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart. Working in stages is deliberate: it lets us build density gradually and match the depth of colour to your own hair as it settles, rather than committing to full intensity on day one. Each session takes two to three hours.
Healing and aftercare
The scalp may look slightly red for a day and the points appear darker than the final result for the first week. Between sessions, protecting the area directly affects how well the next layer takes.
- No washing, sweating or gym for four days after each session
- No swimming pools, sauna or steam for two weeks
- Keep the scalp out of direct sun, or wear a hat
- Moisturise the scalp once healed to keep the points looking crisp
How long it lasts
Results typically hold for two to four years before a refresh. Sun exposure is the main factor that fades them, so a hat or SPF on the scalp directly protects your investment.
