PMU Aftercare: The First 14 Days That Decide Your Result

Aftercare & Safety

You can place pigment perfectly and still lose 40% of it to a client who scrubs their brows on day four. Aftercare is not a leaflet you hand over as an afterthought — it is half the result. Here is the timeline worth walking every client through before they leave.

Days 1–3: the darkest phase

The area looks noticeably darker and bolder than the final result. This is normal — pigment sits in the epidermis as well as the dermis at this stage, and the top layer will shed. Lymph fluid may weep in the first hours; blotting gently with clean gauze keeps it from forming heavy scabs.

Days 4–7: flaking begins

Light flaking starts, and this is where results are won or lost. The client must not pick, scratch or peel. Every flake removed early takes settled pigment with it and leaves a gap that will need correcting.

Days 8–14: the “ghosting” stage

Once the flakes are gone, the brows often look far too light — sometimes almost invisible. Clients panic here. Explain in advance that new epidermis is covering the pigment and that colour resurfaces as the skin settles. Nobody should judge a result before day 28.

What to avoid for the full two weeks

  • Swimming pools, saunas, steam rooms and heavy sweating
  • Direct sun and sunbeds on the treated area
  • Makeup, exfoliants, retinol or acids anywhere near the site
  • Sleeping face-down on the pillow

The retouch is part of the treatment

A first session establishes shape and base colour. The retouch at 6 to 8 weeks corrects density and any patchy retention. Book it at the first appointment — clients who leave without a date booked are the ones who show up at six months unhappy.

Client communication is a taught skill, not a personality trait. Our courses include the consultation and aftercare scripts we use in the studio every day.
