Combo Brows Explained: When to Blend Strokes and Shading

PMU Techniques

Combo brows have become the most requested technique in many studios, and also the most misunderstood. Done properly they give the realism of hair strokes with the durability of shading. Done carelessly they look like two techniques sharing a brow without speaking to each other.

What the technique actually is

A combo brow places hair strokes in the front third of the brow — where the eye looks for realism — and soft powder shading through the body and tail, where density matters more than individual hairs. The strokes provide texture; the shading provides shape and staying power.

Who it suits

Combo works beautifully for clients with sparse brows who still want a natural front, for anyone whose skin is too oily to hold strokes throughout, and for clients coming from faded microblading who want more definition without losing realism.

It is less suitable for very thin or fragile skin, where two techniques in one session means more trauma than the skin should take at once.

Where beginners get it wrong

The transition. The most common failure is a visible seam where strokes end and shading begins. The fix is overlap: strokes should continue into the shaded area and gradually reduce in number, while shading starts feather-light beneath the strokes rather than beginning abruptly after them.

Order of work. Shade first, then place strokes on top. Strokes drawn first get obscured and muddied as soon as shading passes over them.

Saturation. Shading in a combo brow should be lighter than in a full powder brow. If the shading is at full density, the strokes disappear into it and you have simply made a powder brow the slow way.

Learn the sequence, not the look

Combo is a sequencing skill. Once you can control where one technique fades into the other, the look follows. Our training programmes teach the machine fundamentals that combo work depends on.
