How Long Does Permanent Makeup Actually Last?

Aftercare & Safety

Clients ask this before they ask about price. The honest answer is that permanent make-up is semi-permanent: pigment sits in the upper dermis, and the body gradually breaks it down. How gradually depends on four things you can actually explain to a client.

Typical lifespan by technique

  • Microblading — 12 to 18 months before definition softens.
  • Powder brows — 2 to 3 years, fading evenly rather than patchily.
  • Combo brows — 18 months to 2 years, with the shaded areas outlasting the strokes.
  • Lip blush — 2 to 3 years, though colour intensity drops sooner.
  • Eyeliner — often 3 to 5 years, the longest-lasting of the group.

1. Skin type

Oily skin metabolises pigment faster and diffuses fine detail. Dry and normal skin holds crisp work far longer. This single factor can shift a result by a full year in either direction.

2. Pigment choice

Warm-based pigments generally hold their tone longer on most skin. Cooler, ash-based formulas can fade toward grey if placed too shallow. Matching undertone to the client’s skin is what keeps a healed brow looking intentional two years later.

3. Sun exposure

UV is the fastest way to lose a result. A client who sunbathes without SPF on the brow area can lose a season’s worth of pigment in a single summer. Daily SPF on healed PMU is the highest-value advice you can give.

4. Aftercare in the first two weeks

Picking scabs, sweating heavily, or letting the area stay wet during healing pulls pigment out before it settles. Retention is largely decided in the first fortnight — which is why our 14-day aftercare guide matters more than any product.

Set the expectation before the needle

Artists who promise “permanent” get complaints. Artists who explain the fade curve, book the annual refresh at the first appointment, and document skin type get repeat clients. Managing that conversation is part of the craft — and part of what we teach in every course.
